This will be a series of articles on how to paint your home. I am aware that this is a project that a lot of home owners embark on themselves, so I will try to offer some ideas on how to achieve a premium finish. Attempting this without a little working knowledge can be difficult at best. To get you started, here is a list of tools and materials that you will need. You should have the following items:
- Paint
- A paint brush
- A roller cage with a roller cover
- A rolling pole
- A roller pan/bucket and screen
- Drop cloths
- Tape
- Screw drivers (or drill)
- Sanding tools
- Wood putty/drywall mud
- 5-in-1/putty knife
- A hammer/pry bar
- A broom
- And depending on what you are up against, plastic
Preparing to Paint
The first thing that is important after you secure the materials is preparation. Taking the time to prepare your project area properly will protect your home from potential damage. Doing so will also make the application of the paint go more smoothly. A general guideline for the order of this phase is:
- Installing a drop cloth or protective paper on counters and floors
- Covering any fixture that is attached or unmovable
- Paint scraping/removal
- Repairing nail holes and damaged drywall
- Sanding
- Removing power outlet/light switch cover plates
- Cleaning and dusting the project area (this is extremely important and often overlooked)
- Caulking
- Applying tape if desired
